UX/UI Designer

We are looking for a UX/UI designer to work with us designing software to help improve healthcare in Nigeria, Kenya and beyond. At Field, we design and build products to solve very difficult health logistics problems in places with poor infrastructure. Our tech has to function in remote locations with unreliable connectivity, and must oftentimes be used by people with low tech literacy.

What you’ll do every day

As a UX/UI designer at Field, you’ll be a core member of the design team, and work with the design lead and cross-functional product teams to map out user journeys and design interfaces for Field Supply, our health logistics platform. You’ll be tasked with identifying user pain points in Shelf Life, our pharmacy supply service, designing workflows to help solve them, and working on the design details of our UI components.

In the day-to-day, this means you will do things like:

  • Plan and conduct comprehensive user research
  • Document and analyse user research findings
  • Create user journeys, wireframes and sketches to map out the user experience.
  • Visualize your concepts and ideas (Figma is our design tool of choice)
  • Communicate these concepts to the broader team during design reviews, where you should be able to articulate the merits of your approach, brainstorm alternative ideas, and incorporate feedback.
  • Design high-fidelity UIs, working within and contributing to our software’s design system
  • Collaborate with developers to turn UI designs into functional software
  • Find opportunities to make more engaging and useful user experiences via design backlog sprints

Some travel to our offices (and out to the field) in Nigeria and Kenya is required. We are generally pretty flexible with travel arrangements.

Application requirements

  • 3+ years of UX/UI design experience, with a strong portfolio to back it up.
  • You care deeply about usability, and can demonstrate an ability to use design to solve problems.
  • Experience in conducting user research, analysing findings, and mapping out user experiences.
  • Good visual design chops.
  • You communicate thoughtfully and succinctly.
  • You have worked collaboratively with teams to ship products, but can self-organise when needed.
  • You feel comfortable working in lean environments with agile methods.
  • You are fluent in English.

This is a full-time position, with some (negotiable) travel requirements.

Bonus points for:

  • CSS / front-end dev skills.
  • Experience designing for people with low digital literacy. Da- ta visualization skills.

Folio guidelines

Please apply with a CV as well as a folio (or case studies) – please focus on shipped client work rather than unsolicited redesigns. We’d really like to dive into the details of your work, so we’d rather have a few detailed case studies of real-life projects than a lot of shiny-looking screenshots with no context. For each project, tell us about the goals, the context, constraints, the team, your role and your thought process. For example:

Project background: Set the context for the project. What was the goal of the project? What were your constraints? What was the timeline?
Team and your role: What was your exact role? What did you uniquely contribute, and who did you work with? The work and process: show us the range of what you produced, and the process you followed. Research, sketches, wireframes, mockups, screenshots, and a link to working site or app (if possible).
Success metrics: Why are you showing us this project? Do you have any results that show this project achieved its intended goal?
Your learnings: With hindsight, and based on the process and outcome, was there anything you would have done differently?
